Since the 1700s

In some form or another, the concept of a chauffeured vehicle has been in existence since the 1700’s.  Initially for the rich, they started as horse drawn carriages, gilded in gold and pulled by only the finest animals.

Origin of the Word

The word limousine is derived from the name of the French region Limousin, because this covered compartment physically resembled the cloak hood worn by the shepherds there. Alternate lore has the chauffeur wearing a Limousin-style cloak in the open driver’s compartment, for protection from the weather.

The first stretch

The first actual stretch limousine was created in Fort Smith, Arkansas around 1928 by a couch company names Armbruster. They were often referred to as “big band buses” because they were mainly used to transport famous big band leaders, their orchestras, as well as their instruments to various parts if the United States.

Growth in the 30s

In the 1930′s Limousines really started to take off. They were used to transport guests of hotels from the airport to the hotel and also on different sightseeing tours. Thus, the name “Airporter Stretch Coach” was born. After seeing the growing popularity of the vehicles, the movie industry immediately jumped on board. They used limousines to carry film crew and stage personnel around movie sets. During that time, limousines also became a common accessory for movie actors and actresses. You weren’t considered “it” unless you arrived in a stretch limousine.

Present Day

Although limousines were initially reserved for the rich and famous, now hiring a Denver limousine driver such as myself has become commonplace. Fortunately, Denver has come up with a much safer alternative. The Denver B-cycle is a bike sharing program that took a test run at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and officially opened in April 2010. The goal? To reduce the number of drivers on a day-to-day basis and get us all healthier!

You can choose from 510 bikes in 51 locations throughout central Denver. It works in conjunction with mass transit to have locations near popular destinations such as Coors Field and the Denver Performing Arts complex.

They’ve thought of everything! Fenders, skirt and chain guards help keep your work and party clothes clean and dry. The weather is bad outside? No problem! The bikes have drum brakes for all-weather stopping performance and durability. They even have onboard electronics that allow users to track mileage, speed and carbon offset through their website at denver.bcycle.com.

Are you competitive? They even have a Tour de B-cycle, which is a challenge to visit all 51 locations in one day. There are rules – all rides between locations must be completed in less than 30 minutes! You get a t-shirt and a mention on their website.

And it’s inexpensive! An annual membership is only $50 until Sept.30.

As I said, I’ll take a Denver limousine ride over a bicycle any day!  However, I can see the health advantages.

Built in the Netherlands, the Bike Bar (aka the Denver Pedal Hopper or Party Bike) holds 16 people (17 including the provided driver) who face each other, like in “Cheers”, and 10 of them pedal from one place to another. It’s just like a party bus, but you get exercise too. It cruises at a speed of 5 – 8 mph, so don’t expect to get there fast! And there’s no worries about safety … there’s headlights, tail lights, and LED lights around the bar and car… even safety helmets if you want one! Plus the driver does a lot of the work including braking and steering.

There’s a two hour minimum and it’s $180/hour on Friday and Saturday nights and $160/hour from Sunday through Thursday. No worries if the most exercise you have done all summer is to pick up the remote – only five seats have to pedal.

It’s no limousine, but it sounds like fun for a pub crawl or tail gating party. You can’t bring alcohol on board yet, but you can bring snacks. For more information, go to Pedalhopper. I. Red Rocks Park & Ampitheatre
Red Rocks was appropriately named for its giant red rocks and its views are absolutely breathtaking. There are unbelievable rock formations, trails and meadows. It’s a great place to see concerts, watch movies (called Film on the Rocks), hike, bike and even exercise. Colorado is known for its health-conscious culture and with 69 rows of benches and an abundance of stairs, Red Rocks Amphitheatre has become a popular site for runners and those looking for a challenging workout at 6,400 feet. Although I am a chauffeur and sit behind the wheel of a limousine most days, I am also a marathon runner and love the trails.

II. The Brown Place
Right in the heart of downtown Denver is The Brown Palace which is the grand dame of all Denver hotels. Knee-deep in tradition and historic ambience, they’ve renovated and modernized the entire structure to meet the needs and cares of today’s traveler. Everyone from presidents to royalty have slept at the Brown Palace and they have an excellent spa and high tea at one of its elegant restaurants.

Love to people watch? Take a stroll through Denver’s 16th Street Mall, an outdoor shopping and dining center in the Mile High City. Dozens of restaurants and boutiques join chain stores such as Barnes & Noble and the Gap for a one-stop attraction. Lucky Strike bowling alley, United Artists movie theater and Coyote Ugly bar also provide nighttime entertainment.

V. Denver Botanic Gardens
Colorado’s dry climate challenges gardeners across the state, but the Denver Botanic Gardens always provide inspiration. The gardens contain more than 32,000 types of plants, as well as xeriscape gardens that require little water.
